Wenlock Olympian Games

Wenlock Olympian Games

Much Wenlock has long been known as the home of the modern Olympic Games, with the first Wenlock Olympian Games being discussed in 1850, led by Dr William Penny Brookes, to promote ‘the moral, physical and intellectual improvement of the inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood of Wenlock.’

This year the Olympic & Paralympic Games will be held in Rio, whilst the 130th Wenlock Olympian Games will be held in venues across Shropshire.

Showcasing the county’s sporting talent, the events include golf, cricket, hockey, volleyball and athletics as just some of the competition taking place throughout the sporting tournament.

A popular event for all ages – you will find school children through to seniors participating in the competitions – bringing together the community in Much Wenlock and further afield.

If you are planning on visiting Much Wenlock throughout the Olympian Games, the Gaskell Arms is centrally located for all events, and offers B & B as well as self-catering accommodation so guests can come and go as they wish throughout their stay.

If you’re just popping through for the day, enjoy a coffee on the Gaskell Arm’s sun terrace, or a bite to eat in our restaurant or bar – the perfect way to refresh yourself after a busy day of participating in… or even just watching… the sporting events.
